Four Quarters: An Homage To T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets is a dialogue and dance with Eliot's classic poem series. Preserving Eliot's distinctive stanza structures and syntax throughout, Ayers creates an utterly unique poem sequence that simultaneously celebrates the master poet, while taking him to task over his pessimistic stance on humanity.

Poem from Four Quarters

Kenai IV

A raven ascending smooths the air
with a sweep of graceful fervor,
movements many may despair
as an omen of impending terror.
They will resort to organized prayer.
       Others see nothing there to abate,
       redeemed by free will from fate.

       Why such superstition? Enmity.
A need to create enemies to oppose
to prove one’s own righteous purity;
greed that proclaims one faith all-knowing,
one truth pursuing a perfect afterlife eternity.
       Better to love life alive, without dictate,
       better to revel in free will over fate.
